Petit four in Kuwait, baked fresh in our Qurain kitchen. Two different things go by the name — filled biscuits and butter sabé — and which one you want depends on the occasion. The range first.

What petit four actually means
The name is French — petit four, small oven. It referred originally to the low oven temperature these were baked at, not to the size of the biscuit. In Kuwait the name has come to cover a wider range than it does in France, which is why one shop's petit four looks nothing like another's.
You will see it written several ways in Arabic. All of them are the same thing.
Filled or plain
Filled suits a dessert table, a gathering where the biscuits are part of the spread. The colours of the fillings do a lot of the visual work, and an 85-piece plate arrives looking like an arrangement rather than a box of biscuits.
Butter sabé suits coffee. It is drier, less sweet, and does not compete with what it is served alongside. It also keeps better — no filling means nothing to soften.
For a large gathering, many people order both.
How much to order
Biscuits go faster than people expect at a hosting. As a rough guide, three to four pieces per guest for a dessert table, fewer if there are other sweets alongside.
- Small family gathering — the 36-piece box
- Coffee with guests — the 54-piece box or the sticks
- A full spread or an istiqbal — the 85-piece plate or the 100-piece tray
With ghraiba
The 100-piece crystal tray pairs petit four with ghraiba — the crumbly Arabic butter biscuit. The two work together because they are different textures doing the same job: ghraiba dissolves, petit four snaps.
