What actually goes with Arabic coffee

Arabic coffee is bitter and carries cardamom. That points to sweets that are dry rather than creamy, and not too sweet — which is why dates, ghraiba and maamoul have been served alongside it for generations.

Anything very sweet fights the cardamom. Anything creamy sits heavily against a drink that is essentially an infusion. The traditional pairings are traditional for a reason.

If you are serving espresso or latte instead

Different rules. Milk in the coffee means you can go sweeter and richer — filled petit four, chocolate cups, marble chocolate all work. Dark chocolate is the one that spans both.

What to put out for guests

A common arrangement is three things: something with dates, something dry like ghraiba or petit four, and chocolate. That covers most preferences without turning into a dessert table.

For a larger gathering, a plate of each rather than a bigger box of one — variety reads as generosity in a way that quantity does not.
